White Irony
Sunday, January 7, 2007We had a primary activity on Saturday so the Primary kids could get to know their new teachers. After teaching the Valiant 10 class last year, the Primary President felt impressed to move us to the CTR 5 class this year...she said something about us being such great teachers that we really should be teaching a younger more impressionable age group. We agreed our talents were somewhat wasted on the older kids and felt we could have a greater impact on these pre-schoolers.
Though the activity was slightly disengaging - consisting only of coloring and assembling popsicle stick picture frames - for a 25 year old I made the most of the event by questioning young Anthony regarding his favoritism towards certain colors. The conversation follows:
"Which color is your favorite, Anthony?"
"I like them all!" - replied Anthony, with such force and poignancy it was clear that my question, perhaps suggesting not all colors were equal, was entirely absurd in nature to our young friend.
"Which color don't you like?" - unphased by Anthony's response I decided to interrogate further. Could it be our young friend indeed favored some colors over others? Believing this to be the case I awaited his reply.
"I don't like white." - came his simple response.
I proceded to explain the irony of his two choices, but the explanation seemed lost on the 4-year old.
